Imagine if NBC had picked up the original pilot of Star Trek. Any Trekkie worth his salt has seen the hour-long episode that canonically takes place 13 years before the original series. The casting and characterization are the main differences between the pilot and the actual show. The hot young captain in this episode isn't James T. Kirk but rather Christopher Pike. He is looking to leave all this space travel stuff behind before he gets kidnapped by mind-reading aliens and must find a way to escape their underground zoo cell. The only character from the original series that is in this pilot is Spock, and he's nothing like the Spock we came to know and love. He's peppy and enthusiastic, and although his look is nearly identical to the one he has in the series, there's something a little off about it.
